EVEN WITH JUST A FEW hours of sleep, Patrick felt invigorated as he started to walk up the hill. He carefully examined the faces of those coming down just in case, and he was not yet halfway up when he spotted Graw. He was pleased when she also stopped and then waited for him to reach her on the other side of the road.

“You have come back,” said she.

“Aye, the king requested it.”

“He favors you, I think.”

She doubted he did, at least not all of it. “What does she confess?”

Patrick clasped his hands behind his back and started them walking down the hill. “Her father has betrothed her to three lads, at least, whom she is to marry on Friday.”

That was not the worst of it, and she doubted Kylie told them that much unless she had to. Kylie would run, she had to and now Graw was torn between betraying a friend’s trust and warning Patrick. In the end, she decided to keep quiet. “Does your brother love her?”

“Not yet, their marriage was a bit hurried.”

“Hurried? Oh do tell me what happened.”

“Well, as near as I can tell, her father...”
